5 Good Marathon Habits to Develop

What’s the secret to run a sub-4 marathon or to be fit enough to run more than 3 marathons in a year? Well, there are no secret methods or shortcuts, so it really comes down to smart training and be consistent in developing these 5 good marathon habits that we are going to show you!

#1 Find your goal

You are not getting to anywhere if you are running aimlessly. This applies in everything in our lives: Set a goal. Everything will be easier if you know what path you are running into and if you know when can expect a “finishing line”. While you are going hard to pursue it, don’t forget to track the progress as well. That will help you with more self-motivation when you realised you are moving forward!

#2 Never overdo it

Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Ph.D. studied how the best performers continuously improve and concluded that they all pushed themselves just a bit beyond of limit. This is the kind of growth-promoting stress that people name is as “just-manageable challenge”. So you have to know yourself well and set a goal that is challenging, a bit outside of your comfort zone, but also manageable. What you are after is the sweet spot. For example, if you are running 30 miles a week, try building up to 40, instead of a big jump like 60.

#3 Warm up & warm up

You have heard of thousand reminders to warm up your body before an intense workout. But, do you know that you need to warm up your mind as well? Yes, that counts the difference. If your brain’s in a state of fear or high anxiety, your body will follow. This is proven in a research conducted by exercise scientist Samuele Marcora, Ph.D., who noticed that subtle mood influencers can alter performance. So, take this fact with you and remember that before your next race, give yourself some time to have a confidence-boost-talk or just look into the mirror and tell your self, “You can do it”.

#4 Stop giving yourself too many choices

According to the psychologist Roy Baumeister, Ph.D., we all have a limited reservoir of mental energy to use on any given day. Are you aware that making decisions also wears you out? So if you like choosing which running shoes or apparels to go for before the race day, just choose the ones that bring you luck or your “Ace” one. On the race day after flagging off, shut off your mind, stay focus and just run towards to the finishing line. Do not think too much.

#5 Start positive talk

We all know that marathon really hurts. So when the pain hits you during a hard marathon, you constantly have the thought of “I don’t think I can do this”. These negative thoughts can have physical consequences on you, such as tense muscles and elevated heart rate, which possibly makes it even hurtful. But instead of panicking, the good marathoners have “calm conversation” in their mind. It can be as simple as the three-words, “It is OKAY’. Yes, tell yourself that it is okay and normal to feel pain because you are running a marathon and that it is worthwhile for any uncomfortable experience you are feeling right now. Remember that, there is always a rainbow over the storm and for us, we will see if after crossing the finish line.

When will you cross off the Marathon from your bucket list?

0

Research shows that you are more likely by 12% to finish a marathon when you are at a milestone age.

RunRepeat.com has recently conducted a study based on over 2 million results from almost 150 races. Their results indicate that the probability to run a marathon is 13.34% higher at the beginning of a decade (i.e. your -0‘s) and 10.15% higher when the age ends in 5.

Possible explanations

Experts including Jason Fitzgerald (Head Coach of Strength Running) and John E. Coumbe-Lilley (Clinical Associate Professor of Kinesiology and Nutrition) suggest that this trend is due to the power of these ages to provoke contemplation together with the desire to celebrate this milestone with a “not everyone can do it” type of achievement.

Quoting Susan Arruda (6-time fitness champion and certified Personal Trainer Specialist) “The mid-decade milestones bring a smaller spike in participation, but they are still powerful, because they are making us think that we’re more than halfway to the next decade.”

“And for a lot of people, running a marathon is one of those things they want to do at least once in a lifetime, so a milestone age is a good time to cross it off the bucket list.”

How do the genders compare?

Female and male participation follow different distributions. Women’s participation peaks at 30, and men’s at 40. Also, the spikes for women at the milestone ages are more pronounced.

Women are 15.1% more likely to run a marathon at the beginning of a decade and 12.3% more likely in the middle of the decade.

For men, the spikes are smaller. Men are 13.5% more likely to run a marathon at the beginning of a decade and 11.3% – in the middle.

These differences could be explained by a number of reasons. Various experts have given their own reasonings:

  • Women become parent earlier than men; (Robert Jackson – Minimal FIT – Exercise & Nutrition Coach)
  • The average person’s health starts deteriorating after 30 and women are more aware of this and try harder to be healthier;
  • Men’s testosterone dips around 40, so they start to store fat more easily. This prompts them to take action, and running is a popular such action; (Dr. John Rusin – Expert fitness adviser, focused on exercise science and injury prevention)
  • In general, women are less competitive, so they are less likely to run multiple marathons. Because the achievement is more valuable than the competition; (Susan Arruda)
  • Women usually change their priorities after 30. Especially if they have children; (Melanie Young – Certified Health Coach, Award Winning Author, Motivational Muse).

These opinions are backed up by the data. As we can see, men and women finish marathons in equal numbers by the age of 27 – 28. Then the numbers of male participants greatly overshadow the numbers of women.

Is this true for you? Do you remember what age were you when you ran your first marathon?

Or, if you are still planning for it, be sure to check out running calendars and free mobile app.

Review: Sentosa Fun Walk 2018 [5 Km] (by Stargazer)

This was the first fun walk organised by Sentosa and in partnership with National Geographic. Participation was free and all participants were issued with goodie bags containing the event t-shirt, a National Geographic reusable drinking bottle and a canvas tote bag.

It was said to be a fun walk. But after completion, I felt it wasn’t exactly the typical ‘fun walk’ I would have in mind.

Actual Event Day

The event was held at the Palawan Green. This is the 3rd event I am taking part here in Sentosa, after the Spartan Race and Music Run. I took the Sentosa Express and arrived at 2.45 pm with 2 friends to collect our goodie bags. There was no queue and collection was fast and easy.

The weather was exceedingly hot and as it was still early, we headed back to chill out at Resort World. There were lots of tourists and it always make my day looking at families enjoying themselves. At 4.30 pm, I made my way back to Palawan Green and was just in time to catch the flag off at 5 pm.

The walk can be described as consisted of 4 phases. The 1st phase took us to the Merlion and the Skyline Luge. The 1st hydration point was here at the 1 km mark. There wasn’t any cup provided and I believe the organizers expected us to use either our own water bottles or the one issued with the goodie bag. A green initiative, I guess.

We continued the 2nd phase into the Nature Discovery and Imbiah Trail. The trail was initially flat terrain, till we reached the Tempinis Cascade where we had to descend down many flight of steps. The descent was slow as we had to proceed cautiously, especially with so many people, to avoid falling off the slope.

After emerging from the Imbiah Trail, we continued the 3rd phase to Fort Siloso where there was a 2nd hydration point here at the 2.5 km mark. This phase consisted of some up slopes and even took us into the Battery Command Post. We were made to descend down the Siloso Trail, which we did so cautiously as it was quite slippery. At the end, we were fortunate not being made to climb up the Skywalk!

The last phase took us along the Siloso Beach Walk back to the Palawan Green. There were many people enjoying themselves at the beach and the mood was merry and relaxing.

Post Walk Activities

There were quite a number of activities at the Green. Most notably was the F&B kiosk, where diners can purchase on-site BBQ food at a price.

Canon also had a booth, whereby acclaimed photographer Mr. Jayaprakash from the National Geographic shared with us some photography tips.

There was schedule of free movie screening of the ‘Kallang Roar’ at 7.45 pm, but my friends and I left before that for dinner at Seah Im.

Comments

1) I think it wasn’t an easy fun walk, considering the up slopes and nature trails. This may well not be suitable for the elderly and young kids.

2) I feel the hydration point at the 1 km mark was not necessary. Instead, there should have been a hydration point at the finishing point, which I didn’t spot any.

3) I would not mind to pay a small fee for a finisher medal to commemorate the event, considering it is not exactly an easy walk.

4) Overall, I feel the event was well organized with sufficient support from the crew or volunteers.

When Should You Allow Your Kids to Run? Is There a Right Age?

You see that parents start letting their kids take part running event at a young age and you start wondering that, is there an “appropriate” age to start running? So, let’s find it out.

The kids can #JustRunLah

In actual fact, you will find no data that kids will have ligaments injury, cartilage dysfunction or growth plates damage with high mileage. William Roberts, M.D., medical advisor for the Twin Cities Marathon, has conducted several studies on young marathoners, and he has concluded that,

“Kids and mileage basically make us nervous,” Roberts says, “but from all I’ve found, there is no harm being done; they are not getting hurt. If it is their choice, keep doing it.”

But should they?

However, there is also no study to support that too many intensive sports have good impact in kids’ future health. So, do things moderately is the key. In terms of athlete development, a number of sources pointed out that there’s not much benefit in intensive training before puberty. Until puberty, many of the hormones that allow for training adaptations in the musculoskeletal system are not well-developed, and they’re poorly suited for intensive workout such as interval training.

Moderation is the key

So, it seems like what really matters is to nurture the kids’ running habit since young, but not necessarily need to excel in it. Grow their passion, by not killing those with physical burnout (e.g. too much systematic training), high stressors, or even sadly, to sacrifice their happy childhood. If a young runner is having fun and having success, however, should they be stopped from pursuing even more? Our take is, monitor their health and listen to their body.

Do You Think Men Lose Weight Faster Than Women?

Weight loss topic is always an ongoing interest among all of us. You may find someone you have knew seems to be more likely to lose weight than one another. What makes up this individual difference? Research has shown that uncontrollable factors like genetics and age can be contributing, as well as the gender difference. So, do you think men lose weight faster than women?

Besides physiological reasons which aren’t always true long-term, here are some reasons for differences in weight loss between men and women.

Hormones

We all know that women primarily have estrogen and progesterone hormones, while men have primarily testosterone hormone. But, you might not be knowing that these hormones have linked to where fat is stored In our body. In fact, this is the factor that why men and women tend to focus on different body parts in term of weight loss. This is because testosterone promotes fat storage around the belly (apple shape), and estrogen mainly promotes fat storage around the lower body and hips (pear shape). Also, women’s hormones promote a higher fat storage than testosterone which is why women naturally have higher body fat percentages than men.

Metabolic Rate

In general, men are biologically set up to have higher metabolic rate and thus they burn calories faster than women. Hormones play a part in this difference, again. But, this is also because men have a larger body size in average and more muscles mass in comparison to women. Importantly, most women go on low calories diet which may lower their metabolic rates.

But this is not long-term

According to a 2014 study from British Journal of Nutrition studying women and men who went through 4 different commercial weight loss programs, the results had shown the men had lost twice as much fat-free mass and three times as much fat mass than women for each diet. So, although men lost more weight, they lost more muscle because they had more to start with. Over time, fat-free mass loss in men was balanced out with the women. At the end of the study, weight loss between both genders was similar.

5 Reasons Why College Students Should Start Running Every Day

Physical exercise is not as boring and tiresome as most people perceive it. It can actually be fun; all one needs to do is to understand its importance. There is a wide range of physical activities so why running? It’s free! Who wouldn’t like saving some dollars and still achieve the same results as one who has paid for a gym? You also enjoy the liberty to run as long as you wish, unlike the treadmill which has a limited time. One more thing, you do not need to be a professional to enjoy it. Every person should incorporate running into their schedule since the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

So how will running help a college student?

  • Improves Memory Retention and Brain Development

Memory retention is very important to students since they constantly need to remember all content learned. Stress reduces the brain’s ability to process and retain information. According to a 2010 research done by Cambridge neuroscientists on the physical activity of mice, running helps in the growth of brain cells associated with memory retention. Therefore, students who run for at least 30 minutes daily remember almost twice as much since the body releases dopamine and norepinephrine which increases attention and retention while learning. The implication – students who are physically active perform better than those who don’t.

  • Gives You a Chance to Enjoy Time Alone

Lecture halls and college hostels are mostly noisy and crowded. Running gives you time away from all the hustle and an opportunity to meditate. Meditation is known to completely free our minds from all the happenings around us and focus on only one thing. This will relieve you of stress and depression. Research has found that running helps in the production of hormones that help to lift one’s mood, leaving you with a balanced mindset. You also get the chance to enjoy the fresh air and the outdoor breeze. Additionally, you get a better view of your surrounding while running – this mostly helps the students who are new in the area.

  • Helps in Socializing

Once you’ve made running part of your daily schedule, you are bound to make some new friends along the way. These friends act as running mates and offer encouragement to keep going even when it seems tough. You may also be seen as an inspiration by people who have often been interested in taking a morning run but are often put off by weather conditions or laziness. Such people will likely join the person who has the same goals as them. There is also a possibility of growth where some people start by running for fun and end up forming a club where you meet like-minded people. You may also start a blog to share your experiences (you can engage a college essay writer as a start if you are not familiar with writing).

  • It Keeps You Healthy and Boosts Confidence

Exercising regularly, as opposed to browsing site after site all day, acts as an energy boost since most college students often feel tired and sluggish. It also helps to strengthen bones and build lean muscles and reduces the chances of getting heart diseases since it aids in regulating the blood flow. Additionally, it regulates cholesterol levels which are the major cause of heart problems. Running also boosts metabolism leading to weight loss and builds muscles. According to David Felson, a researcher from Boston University, running improves knee health. Surprising huh? For those that have a problem with their bowel movements, running helps by contracting the intestinal muscles.

90% of the people who run listen to music while at it. Music takes away all the worries leaving one feeling strong and confident. Since running helps in building lean muscles and a well-toned body, you will comfortably fit into that body-hugging dress that you like. Who wouldn’t want that? That goes a long way in boosting your confidence.

  • Keeps You Alert

Adding a running routine to your schedule keeps you on your toes since there is a specific time to run and duration. This helps you arrange your activities well to accommodate classes, leisure and running, and leaves no chance for postponing things. Learning how to follow a tight schedule gives the student a sense of discipline. Running also keeps the mind alert. Hence, you’re more attentive.

30% of American adults experience insomnia – this is according to ‘sleep’ medicine. A study carried out on a group of old people also showed that those who worked out even a little took less time to fall asleep as compared to those who did nothing. Having in mind that good sleep is essential to having a productive day, why not just have a run?

Conclusion

Running, like any other physical activity, is not easy especially at the beginning. However, from the immense benefits that come from running for even a few minutes, it’s worth the hustle. College students should really consider including a thirty minute run into their daily routine.

Considering the many advantages of running, are you willing to try taking a 30-minute run? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section.

MILO Marathon Turns 42

0

The National MILO Marathon is all set for its 42nd season of discovering the best runners in the Philippines.  An expected 150,000 runners are expected to sign up in the country’s most durable and prestigious footrace.

The National Finals will be held in Laoag City on December 9 marking the event’s return to Luzon after stops in Iloilo and Cebu the past two years.  2018 is also the 200th anniversary of the founding of the province of Ilocos Norte and the City of Laoag so expect an equally scenic and challenging course that will pass through the areas major historical and tourist attractions.

Aside from cash prizes and gifts from sponsors, this year’s MILO Marathon King and Queen will have a shot at representing the country in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games and also compete in another overseas event according to Dr. Philip Ella Juico of the PATAFA.  Reigning MILO King Jeorge Andrade of Davao was sent and emerged as the champion in last month’s Borneo Marathon.

In order to find out who will get to race with Andrade and MILO Queen Mary Joy Tabal, a series of 10 regional qualifying races will be held beginning in Urdaneta City, Pangasinana on July 15 followed by the much-awaited Metro Manila race at the SM Mall of Asia on July 29.  For a change, runners will be negotiating a totally new route as the race will not traverse Roxas Boulevard anymore upon advice of the MMDA and instead stretch further down Bayani Road in Fort Bonifacio.

Succeeding races will be hosted by the cities of Tarlac (August 25), Batangas (September 16), Lucena (September 30), Iloilo (October 7), Cebu (October 14), General Santos (October 21), Butuan (November 11) and Cagayan de Oro (November 18).  The earlier than usual announcement will accord runners more time to prepare especially for the longer distances.

Instead of the traditional shirt and towel, all finishers of 42 and 21 kilometers within the cut-off time will be rewarded with a training hoodie plus a medal and loot bag.  Onsite registration is ongoing at Landmark branches in Makati, Trinoma and Alabang while online registration and more information may be found at www.milo.com.ph and www.runrio.com.

The MILO Marathon will also continue its advocacy of providing free rubber shoes to poor but deserving public school children in the host cities in coordination with the Department of Education.  This year, MILO will also be donating basketballs in order to involve more children in sports as they seek to build champions not just in sports but also in life.

Run for the Oceans (by Rebekah Ong)

Saturday, 9 June 2018 was my 2nd Tribe run with the Adidas Runners (AR) Singapore and it’s was themed event labelled “Run for the Oceans”. It was a global running movement that uses the power of sport to raise awareness for the threat of marine plastic pollution.

Above: Pre-run photos around the event site

A lot of us can’t go without our daily lives without using or having that is made of plastic. It is used in practically everything from our phones to the packaging of products like our food when we go ‘da bao’ our lunches etc. But for all the benefits plastic has given us, disposing of products – particularly those designed to be used only once, such as packaging – has become a major environmental issue because of the carelessness of its disposal.

Plastic pollution is an alarming problem for the environment because of the sheer rate that it keeps entering our oceans every year. Not only are plastics hard to break down, it leaves particles that can be harmful to the living things in the ocean while breaking down. Marine mammals have also been found to be entangled in the marine litter and over 90% of all seabirds have plastic pieces in their stomachs. These are just some of the dangers of plastics and the ocean.

Today’s event takes place at Aloha Sea Sports Center, East Coast Park (ECP) with registration starting at 07:00hrs. Registered participants were each given an AR Run for the Oceans event tee, an Adidas water bottle &  a nice black canvas bag and all of us were pleasantly surprised. After we have checked in and deposited our bags, we headed out to the beach area to enjoy the cooling morning weather and take some photos around the event site.

Today’s event was a big one with not only a big turn out by the participants but there were some local talents from the media coming also to support the event. The event was emceed by 98.7 FM’s Joakim Gomez and Kimberly Wang! A short sharing session by 2 dive enthusiasts Victoria and Eugenia shared their experience on diving and how they saw plastic pollution affect the ocean. Before the event started, both the emcees encouraged everyone to download and track our run using the RUNTASTIC app as Adidas will be donating $1 USD  for every kilometre for the first million kilometer that is clocked in between 8 June to 8 July 2018. The money will then go directly to the Parley Ocean Plastic Program to further cut into the pollution problems.

The actual run was flagged off around 8 am and it was lead by AR Singapore Captains and Co-Captains with all the participants following behind. Though it was a late start, it was still pretty cooling as much of ECP was shaded. I ran together with my running buddies Calvin & Yi Hsiu and it was nice to have their company. ECP was the perfect location for this event because of the beautiful views of the beaches and sea and while running along the route, it gives you time to reflect at how important it is for us to help play our part in fighting plastic pollution, if not nice beaches like these will cease to exist in the future and so will marine life that thrive in these oceans.

Above Photos: Runsociety

Once all of us had completed the run, we all treated to nice, cold cans of Pocari Sweat drinks and a simple breakfast buffet which included, broccoli & cauliflower casserole, fresh fruit sticks, bruschetta and many more other yummilious goodies! That was definitely a welcomed treat as many of us were hungry.

Overall, it was a great way to start my weekend. I’m sooo happy that I managed to do my part in today’s event even though how small it may be. Big thanks to Adidas Singapore for organising this meaningful event!

My Laguna Phuket Marathon 2018 [5km & HM] (by Lingderella)

Yes! Finally another runcation and it’s Willis and my first time to Phuket! Thanks to Justina and Chee Beng for bringing us around Phuket ? It’s their 3rd time running in Laguna Phuket Marathon and maybe they would be back again next year like tio sorcery? ?

It’s not the right time of the month for me and I was in a lot of pain. I’m cursing a lot on the first day of the trip and I even had the thought that I would be better at home and recuperate. It seriously felt as if I’m going to give birth to a baby(though I don’t know how giving birth feels ?) as the pain is so intense. I assumed the pain was the reason that I vomited out my breakfast on the plane and then the in-flight meal after we touched down Phuket while on the ride to our stay ? I don’t get air sick usually. I thought GG, there goes my holiday ?

Luckily after a few dose of pain killers I felt much better already and hoped that my runs will be fine. We stayed at Outrigger Laguna Beach Resort, it’s an awesome stay and only about 5 minutes walk to the race site which also was the REPC location. REPC was efficient as we can check our bib number beforehand on their website and fill up a form so we just need to pass the volunteers our form and they go trace accordingly to our bib number. They are so sweet, our bib and race singlet are already put inside an envelope. After collecting our race pack, we proceed to a counter for us to check whether the timing chip is working or not. It’s the 13th Laguna Phuket Marathon this time. Justina and Chee Beng participated in the 5km and full marathon category while Willis and I participated in the 5km and the half marathon category. I didn’t really put in much effort in my trainings and actually was even using this half marathon as a LSD for Gold Coast Marathon (Cross my fingers and hope that the Gold Coast trip will still be happening and goes on smoothly) as I already paid a coach for the runcation package for the GCM but till now seems like air tickets and accommodations not even settled though its only just about 2 weeks away already.

Heard from Justina that last year, even the Thai Princess participated in the half marathon category and have bodyguards running by her side! ? I imagined it was somewhat similar to Kim Jong Un’s “jogging bodyguards” lah though heard that the Thai Princess’s bodyguards drop out after a few kilometers ?

On Saturday there’s a Pasta party lunch for the half marathon and full marathon runners, sort of carbo loading for the runners and the emcee said that there were runners from more than 50 countries and 260 runners from Singapore participating in the various categories! That’s a lot Singaporeans! ? And the very same day there’s the kids 2km, 5km and 10km category whereas the half marathon and full marathon race was on Sunday. The 5km were flagged off at 5.20pm. There’s a bit of drizzling but weather felt good to me as I prefer rain than sun. Nothing interesting or any nice sceneries along the route. The 5km route even have 2 hydration points. And there’s a lot of photographers along the way.

On Sunday morning, Willis and I just reached race site minutes before flag off. I was hoping that the route could bring us more scenery than the 5km route but it was quite disappointing as we only ran pass villages, streets and houses, plantations and kampungs. It’s just very similar to the Camel Muar I ran in Malaysia last year except this time with some buffaloes and chickens along the way. No pretty scenery like I’ve imagined with pretty beaches and sound of waves hitting the shores. Maybe only the full marathon runners had enjoyed prettier sceneries.

Flag off for the half marathon was at 5.30am, which was Singapore’s 6.30am. But luckily the sunrise is not so early and I didn’t felt much sun at all the entire run. It was a quite a heavy drizzle when flag off but it stopped shortly luckily. Though its not hot or humid but its not cooling either and I can see many runners already fully soaked in sweat just after the first few kilometers into the run.

The hydration points were all well stocked up with icy cold Gatorade of different flavors and also icy cold water as well. Yes! All the hydration points have cold water and nearly all their hydration points after 10km I realised offered sponges that were soaked in cold water and they also offered fruits such as bananas and watermelons! ? The full marathon runners even had coconuts! Everything’s cold, their gels provided were also cold! Willis and I also enjoyed the popsicle at one of the hydration point which we thought needed money at first but was free of charge ?

I took sponges at all the hydration points to keep myself cool though its quite unglam for me lah because I just kiap it with my sports bra though I don’t know whether it helps in cooling me down or not but it definitely feels shiok ? Though the entire route I noticed only just a van, which is their toilet. Maybe they had more than just one throughout the route just that I didn’t notice it and there’s no direction signs as well.

Medals is really pretty and it spins! There’s massage available at the race village and food provided for the runners as well. There’s finisher tee for both the full and half marathon as well and results were out on their website as soon as we completed the run ? Really appreciate my dear Willis for running by my side all along motivating me ❤ I will definitely want to go Thailand to have a runcation again but maybe not Laguna Phuket as there’s still so many places I had yet been to.

ASICS and Disney Team up to Get Families Moving

The release of Disney·Pixar Incredibles 2 will launch ASICS’ mission to encourage families to get moving

True sport performance brand ASICS has today announced a global partnership with the world’s largest entertainment company, The Walt Disney Company. Ahead of the release of the hotly anticipated family blockbuster Disney·Pixar Incredibles 2, ASICS will deliver a cross-media campaign to get families moving this summer.

With today’s population the least active in history, ASICS will target thousands of families to inspire them to get active together. This builds on ASICS’ recently launched global brand campaign ‘I MOVE ME’, which aims to inspire people to get active and move regardless of who they are and how they move. The partnership perfectly complements Disney’s Healthy Living commitment which seeks to help and inspire the whole family to be happier and healthier by eating better and being more active together.

Set to launch and run on digital channels in June 2018, the movement campaign is based on a shared mission of inspiring the whole family to get moving.

Inspired by the Parr family – the film’s iconic family of hero characters – and movement influencers, ASICS and Disney will launch a series of digital content, in-store activations and limited-edition product.

ASICS will create a series of ‘super workout videos’ inspired by the powers of each of the Disney·Pixar Incredibles 2 characters; from super strength and stretch, to stealth, balance and speed. Featuring a number of international ASICS FrontRunners, thebrand’s ambassadors of movement, each video will provide fun and achievableexercises for families to replicate as well as opportunities to visit the ASICS store and receive super rewards including certificates and incentives on exclusive products.

ASICS will also release a unique range of limited edition Disney·Pixar Incredibles 2 x ASICS footwear, featuring three running shoes for fans. Inspired by characters including Mr. Incredible and Edna Mode, the shoes will be available in selected ASICS stores. The shoes will incorporate performance and design features including the iconic eye mask logo, unique sockliner designs and a collector’s edition box to hero each character.

On the partnership, Robin Karakash, Director of Integrated Marketing Communications ASICS EMEA said: “We are delighted to announce this exciting partnership with Disney·Pixar and Incredibles 2. Around the world rates of physical activity are dropping, especially amongst children, so our mission at ASICS is to get generations of families moving more and we are certain that we’ll be able to inspirethousands to move and enjoy the power of exercise.”

  • Thai National Team Boonthung Srisung and Natthaya Thanaronnawat win Half Marathon.
  • 9,000 runners sets a new record for Laguna Phuket Marathon.

Nine thousand runners from more than 50 countries took to the start line of the 2018 Laguna Phuket Marathon on 9thand 10thJune and even before the first start, records had been smashed: Largest field of runners ever (9,000); the largest number of international participants (1,300), the largest ever Marathon participation (2,000), largest ever Half Marathon participation (3,000), and the largest ever 10.5km participation (2,000).

In the iconic Marathon distance it was 2016 winner Koji Nishizawa (winner of the 5km distance the day before in a time of 00:17:09) who at the 10km check point was in the lead group consisting of Ethiopian Kisi Koniti Gerba (second in the 10.5km the day before) and Thai national team runner Supit Chantharat.

After a tough battle over the first half of the course, Nishizawa broke away to claim the Men’s title in a time of 02:44:16 ahead of Chantharat in second with local favourite Jaray Jearanai (THA) finishing fast to take third. In the Women’s division it was Sabrina Polito (ITA) who got the better of a strong field of Thai and international runners to cross the line first in a time of 03:30:27.

Following his record-breaking 2,215 km charity run in 2017, Thai rockstar and celebrity Artiwara “Toon” Khongmalai, was back competing at the Laguna Phuket Marathon, and for the first time Thai running idol and author of “Homo Finishers”, Sarawut Hengsawad.

A top-class Half Marathon field included Thai national team runners, Olympians Boonthung Srisung and Natthaya Thanaronnawat. Boonthung was the runaway winner in the Male division in a time of 01:13:08, six minutes faster than last year’s winner while in the Women’s division Natthaya Thanaronnawat claimed the title in a time of 01:27:02 ahead of Maire Nic Amhlaoibh (IRL) in second.

In a packed 10.5km field, last year’s power couple Hiroki Nakajima (JPN) and Tomomi Nakajima (JPN), on honeymoon at the 2017 race and overall winners in the Marathon male and female divisions respectively, returned this year to take out the 10.5km male and female divisions in times of 00:34:25 (two minutes faster than the 2017 winner) and 00:41:49 respectively, and then went on to race the Half Marathon the following day finishing second and third.

Joining the 2,000 10.5km runners was Phuket’s Governor, Norapat Plodthong and Vice Governor Sanith Sriwihok.

Meet Zhao De of V8Runners

0

Hello all! I am Zhao De, turning 36 this year, with chubby cheeks and extra fats around my waistline. I used to do multi-sports in my tertiary days, representing my school for IVP tournaments in Kayaking, Dragon-boating and Triathlon. My constant running, swimming, cycling and gym training helped me to keep in shape until 2 years ago.

I took the sabbatical leave to take care of my newborn baby as my wife’s work requires her to travel frequently. During that period, I felt stressed, sleepless and anxious. I paid little attention to what I ate, stopped exercising and eventually gained a lot of weight. I started to experience difficulty in breathing and got tired easily.

In mid-2017, I was called up for IPPT- FFI from my NS reservist unit. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol level and obesity. It was alarming!  Immediately, I started my diet plan by cutting down carbohydrates and sweets. I also instilled a daily exercise regime by going for slow jogs around my estate. 2 months later, I was recalled back to the medical centre. My medical tests showed a slight improvement in my blood pressure (130/90). My weight also decreased from 90kg to 85kg. For this time, the Medical Officer endorsed my IPPT-FFI. In order to keep up with the yearly check, I better improve my overall fitness, health and maintain a healthy BMI. The message is clear, I need to stay fit to take care of my family.

I learnt about V8Runners from Grace and Ivan who are my close friends, they recently moved to Vue 8 Residence. Grace & Ivan invited me to join V8Runners for their weekly Sunday morning runs at 7 am. This interest group was formed by Vue 8 residents, promoting fitness and health among their residents. The first time I met the founders, Stanley and Jade, I immediately hit it off with them. They are also running shoe lovers! On top of that, I also formed close bonds with new friends who share common topics. I felt happier and less fatigue after these months of training. Most importantly, my blood pressure and cholesterol level are now in the normal range!

I have participated in the weekly runs since October 2017, every session is fun and enjoyable. The weekly session comprises of warm-up, core muscles strengthening exercises and in between some yoga! To date, we have completed many long distance runs, hill runs, stairs climbing and trail runs. In each run, I will try to improve my intensity, distance and consistency. I honestly feel that I will stay with the V8Runners forever as I enjoy their camaraderie!

Our team have participated in 2XU Half Marathon, Sundown Marathon and The Performance Series together. I hope that in the long run, we will also participate in overseas running events.

Run for fitness and health, say NO to diabetes!
